Station
of Nature Research and Ecological Education was established on
September 1997. It was established according to the decision of
council of Marijampole Municipality by reorganising the Laboratory
of Nature Research belonging to Marijampole Student’s Creative
Centre. Now Station of Nature Research and Ecological Education
functions as independent budget institution.
The beginning of the Station history we can keep the
years of 90’s. Students in the Station of Young Naturalists of
Marijampole town banded a Botanical circle then. The circle headed
by A. Balsevičius joined senior students of Marijampole secondary
schools together who were interested in and good at natural sciences
(especially botanical science).
The Station of Young Naturalists of Marijampole was
reorganised to Natural Division of Marijampole Student’s Creative
Centre. So, the students of botanical circle began to work in
this division.
The decision to establish Students’ Scientific Club
“Herba” was made in Natural Division in 1992. The constituent
conference of the Club “Herba” took a part in May. The members
of past botanical circle formed the nucleus of the Club “Herba”
and a lot of new students joined it. For a lot of them committed
club’s time was insufficient. So, they weren’t able to finish
all planned work as well as to see into the abstruse vegetative
world and to understand it better. For the time they spent by
the microscopes, plants’ guide book and other non-fiction (it
was not able to find in the school library), banded harmonious
collective of young and creative people. The Club members accomplished
a heavy work in accumulation and managing of the herbariums and
database of phytocenology. They used to spend a lot of their spare
– time by collecting plants’ samples for the herbarium on expeditions.
Describes of phytocenology were done by them after these expeditions
too. They accumulated a lot of knowledge not just by enriching
their knowledge in interesting things theoretically, but by working
with the help of enthusiastic leader in nature as well.
They were often among laureates and winners in Republican
Scientific Conferences and in Biology Olympiads. A lot of them
are students at Universities and promising science workers at
the moment.
Club’s “Herba” activity expanded in 2 years. Research
works carried out by the Club “Herba” members were acknowledged
by local institutions and institutions of other towns of Lithuania
too. A lot of attention attracted events of environmental education
and Republican Scientific Conferences of Naturalists. So, as a
result of Club’s “Herba” activity expansion the Laboratory of
Nature Research was established instead of Scientific Club “Herba”
of Nature Division in September 1995 in Marijampole Student’s
Creative Centre. The Laboratory of Nature Research is discretionary
subdivision of Marijampole Student’s Creative Centre (head of
Laboratory of Nature Research – A. Balsevičius). Some of
permanent employees have worked in this Laboratory of Nature Research
already. Because of activity expansion it was clear that Laboratory
of Nature Research would outperform it’s functions if it were
independent institution. That’s why some workers of the Laboratory
of Nature Research applied to the council of Marijampole Municipality
with request to establish independent institution. After long
discussions and considerations the Laboratory of Nature Research
of Marijampole Student’s Creative Centre was reorganised to independent
institution – Station of Nature Research and Ecological Education
(director of Station of Nature and Ecological Education – A. Balsevičius)
on 03-11-1997. We moved out of small premises in Tarpučių
Street to a spacious premises belonged to bathhouse in Varpo Street,
which were inapplicable to our activity and in a bad state.
Now we reconstructed these premises to rather cosy
cabinets for work, teaching and for holding of funds. A lot of
various research works of biological diversities were carried
out in different territories of Lithuania. A lot of projects of
environmental education were accomplished. Local authorities of
Lithuania and international funds financed these projects.
Station of Nature Research and Ecological
Education functions as independent institution.
Character and goals of activity of
Station of Nature Research and Ecological Education:
- Scientific
and applied research of biological diversity (species of plants
and animals and their communities) in nature and anthropogenic
territories.
- Research
of biological diversity in programmes of ecological monitoring.
- Accumulation,
systemization, analysis and storage of scientific informative
funds.
- Environmental
education organization and co-ordination.
